My entry for the annual Wunderkammer book of illustration published by Falmouth University. Tarantism was a social phenomenon in medieval Europe, notably Italy, involving crowds of up to thousands of people at a time dancing erratically until they collapsed from exhaustion. The hysteria was thought to be caused by tarantula bites, and the Italian dance Tarantella is said to originate from it.
